Changeling
The one that would not stay what it was.
One among them would not stay what it was. No orchard will own it, and no record will explain. It was set to ferment with its kin, in the same cold dark, by the same slow hands, and asked of no more than the rest. Yet where the others kept their nature, this alone went strange, and would not be called back. Something sweet crept through it that no apple ever carried, and nothing living meant. What arrived this once will not be summoned twice. So drink it while it lingers, this wayward, willful thing, for it answers to no one, and it shall not pass this way again.
